What Is JET?
Description
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) programme was initiated in 1987 with the aim of enhancing mutual understanding between the people of Japan and people from other nations.
Participants of the JET programme travel to Japan and work in local governments, boards of education, and junior and senior high schools, as either ALTs or CIRs.
To qualify for the programme, a tertiary degree (in any subject) is required, as well as a general interest in, and a willingness to learn about, Japan. To apply from New Zealand, New Zealand citizenship is required.
ALT
The majority of JET participants are Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs). ALTs usually work in public junior and/or senior high schools, assisting a Japanese teacher of English during English classes.
This method of teaching is called “team teaching” and has advantages over teaching with only one teacher, such as students experiencing conversational English instead of text book English.
Duties ALTs may be required to perform include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Team teaching English classes at junior and/or senior high school
- Preparation of teaching materials
- Engagement in local international exchange activities
- Assistance with English speech contests
To become an ALT, prior knowledge of Japanese is not essential.
CIR
A smaller number of JET participants are Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). CIRs work in local government offices or related organisations, and are primarily involved with international activities such as cultural exchange programmes.
Duties CIRs may be required to perform include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Implementing international exchange programmes
- Organising and presenting cultural events
- Interpreting at events
- Creating newsletters
- Editing and translating pamphlets
To become a CIR, strong Japanese ability is required.
